What is a Cacao Ceremony?

Cacao or raw chocolate has been part of the human story for roughly 3,000 years.  The first known people to use cacao are from the Olmec civilization, living in what is now known as south-central Mexico. The Mayans later used cacao ceremonially and shamanistically and were the first people to use cacao as currency and attributed it to various gods.  The cacao we will be using for this ceremony comes from Guatamala, and is attributed to Ixmucane, the Mayan Goddess of Maize.

Cacao contains powerful antioxidants, essential vitamins and minerals, healthy fat, and mood-boosting properties that aid in the production of endorphins.  Raw cacao beans are full of life affirming amino acids, the building blocks of cells.  The high levels of amino acids lead to the release of adrenaline and dopamine, which has a positive impact on mood.  Amino acids enhance blood and oxygen flowing into the brain, stimulate the production of other mood-boosting neurotransmitters, which can lead to feelings of bliss, euphoria, contentment and joy.  This is why cacao is used ceremonially as a heart opener, and is believed to aid in the release of negative energy and blocks in the heart space.
